Jackson Mott
Baby Boy
Baby Jackson was born on August 12th, 2024 at 7:58AM. He was born weighing 7lbs 5.5oz, with the most beautiful baby blue eyes. He enjoyed spending his first day with his Mom, Dad, Grandma, and Big Sister.
Trouble Begins
August 12th - August 14th
During the afternoon / night of August 12th, Mom noticed Jackson shaking repeatedly and reported it to the nurse on call.
Shortly after, they diagnosed that Jackson was having seizures. Jackson was transferred and transported to Nemour's Children Hospital in Orlando. Mom immediately checked herself out of the hospital and traveled with him.
Jackson had a stroke in-utero. A blood clot or clots moved through a hole in his heart, to his brain, causing an unknown amount of damage. The doctors believed this was the cause of his seizures and shaking. Jackson was immediately put on anti-seizure medication and hooked up to an EEG (electroencephalogram) for monitoring.
The single anti-seizure medication was not enough however, and Jackson was given a second anti-seizure medication, in addition to the first. This left Jackson extremely tired, and he slept through most of his first week.
During the first few days hooked up to the EEG, Jackson had 16 different recorded seizure episodes.
MRI
August 15th
Jackson was scheduled to have an MRI to determine the damage caused by the stroke. The doctors are not sure what the full extent of the damage will be. It is likely that at a minimum, Jackson will need Physical and Occupational therapy when he is older. If the damage is severe, he may exhibit signs of cerebral palsy and other issues.
Thankfully, at least for the moment, Jackson looks like a completely healthy baby that just has some slight seizures. His body is otherwise working as it should. An echo of his heart came back perfectly healthy, amongst many other tests the doctors ran.
Jackson was fed his first bottle of Mom's milk today, and he overcame the drowsiness caused by his anti-seizure medication for 10 minutes. He watched his Momma with his baby blue eyes the whole time.
Recovery Begins
August 16th
Thankfully Jackson is beginning to recover quickly. His EEG monitor came off first today, and he was awake for 20 minutes after nursing for just over a half hour.
Later in the day, the doctors disconnected Jackson from everything except his IV and NG tube (as the medications had him sleep through many of his feedings). They also attempted another spinal tap to check for infection, as they did not get enough fluid from the prior attempts to run their tests.
Mom is feeling much better following her C-section. She is up on her feet - with the aid of a binder - and recovering well.
The Road to Recovery
August 17th
Jackson was disconnected from everything today! The results of his last spinal tap came back fully negative for any infections, so the doctors disconnected the IV antibiotic medication and are continuing to ween him off of the anti-seizure medication. The spinal tap was the last terrifying hurdle of the process for Mom and Dad.
Jackson got his first bath today and was upgraded to a better crib. Mom was also able to dress him fully for the first time.
Nearing the End of the Tunnel
August 18th
The doctors started using the D-word (discharge) today!! Mom and Dad have some homework to do - watching some videos given by the doctors, checking car seats, etc. - and there is not a definite date set yet, but Jackson spent today sleeping and cuddling with Mom and Dad. He is continuing to improve.
Ready to Go
August 19th
Today Jackson took more steps towards getting discharged from the hospital. He was administered a hearing exam, and Mom and Dad got his car seat so that the doctors could perform a final check to ensure that his vitals were stable while in it. That's where they got this wonderful picture of Jackson doing his best to mean mug the camera.
He passed both tests with flying colors! With these last tests passed, Jackson is planned to be discharged tomorrow! Please keep the family in your prayers as they prepare to make the journey back home.
Finally Home
Jackson and the Mott family are finally home! They made it home safely this evening after being discharged from the hospital this afternoon.
This is just the first huge step on the beginning of their journey. They still have a long road ahead of them.
